Yakima Valley Credit Union Celebrates Annual Credit Union Day

Yakima, Washington ( October 10, 2008) – On the third Thursday in October, credit unions around the world will come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day and the role the financial institutions play in our communities. The Oct. 16, 2008, event will mark 60 years since the first celebration took place to honor credit unions’ proud history of putting people before profits in order to provide access to affordable financial services to all their members.

Credit unions are unique because they are not-for-profit, democratically controlled, member-owned cooperatives. Members of credit unions pool their assets to provide savings, low-cost loans and a variety of other financial services to each other. This cooperative spirit of the movement is embodied by 177 million worldwide members, working together to achieve economic advancement.

At credit unions, every customer is both a member and an owner. This year’s theme – My Credit Union, It Belongs to Me – celebrates the economic democracy and equal ownership rights of each credit union member, regardless of how much money that member may have in savings.

Because of their member/owners, some 49,000 credit unions are able to play a vital role in the development and financial stability in the communities they serve by providing low fees, competitive rates, and high-quality consumer services to their members.

This International Credit Union Day, please visit a credit union and celebrate the credit union difference, our proud heritage, and the wonderful opportunities credit union membership has offered for more than 150 years.
