Community Involvement
2009 Community Project
The Yakima Valley Credit Union annual community involvement project is the City of Yakima Fire Department. Yakima Valley Credit Union will celebrate 70 years of service to its members in 2009 and wanted to honor the firefighters who started this Credit Union using a cigar box for their deposits in 1939. Since then, YVCU has evolved to what it is today.
Our goal is to raise $15,000 for the firefighters to help them purchase life saving equipment they would not otherwise be able to purchase. To obtain this goal the credit union is planning several community events for 2009 with the firefighters. Please continue to check our site often for activities. Visit http://www.ci.yakima.wa.us/services/fire/ for more information about the City of Yakima Fire Department.
Last year the community project donated over $17,000 to ‘Ohana, Memorial’s Mammography Center.
Youth Financial Literacy EducationYakima Valley Credit Union (YVCU) is committed to inspiring the youth of our community to take charge of their financial future. YVCU offers classroom presentations to kindergarten through high school students addressing money decisions including budgeting, savings, managing checking accounts, credit, car buying and much more.
For more information on a YVCU representative visiting your classroom or your child’s classroom, please call 509-225-6496.
Financial LiteracyYVCU understands the importance of basic financial education. That’s why we offer a variety of free resources to our members and the community including free seminars, programs, and links on our website to help people learn how to set a personal budget, use credit, apply for loans, and—most importantly—establish good habits for wise spending and saving.
In-School Student-Run Credit UnionYakima Valley Credit Union (YVCU) has partnered with the Yakima School District to open a student run YVCU Branch at A. C. Davis High School. This branch provides Davis students with real life experience as they serve fellow students and staff of Davis High School. Students participate in the program as a part of their class curriculum under the direct supervision of their teacher and the coaching of YVCU staff. YVCU's student-run in-school branch is a part of the Business Education Program.
The Davis In-School Branch is open to the Davis students and faculty everyday during their lunch periods.
We are going to be working closely with the school's Marketing class to assist with the Marketing of the branch to the students and staff and to teach appropriate Marketing concepts as it relates to the credit union.
"Deposit Days at School"
Program for Elementary and Middle Schools
The “Deposit Days at School” Program will enhance students’ awareness about the value of their money and the importance and many benefits of saving. Credit Union employees make onsite visits to elementary and middle schools; offer information about our children's saving clubs (the Dahler Club for Cents-able Kids and Teen Connection); open accounts; take deposits and offer rewards for saving; and teach money management skills at an age appropriate level.
Get Set ProgramYakima Valley Credit Union participated in Bank Day for the Get Set Program. Kids in the program were given a presentation about credit unions verses banks and about savings. Kids then toured the branch office. The program takes place during the month of July.
CU Back at School

The Yakima County Credit Unions come together and fill 4,400 folders with paper, erasers, pencils, crayons, glue sticks and rulers to give to local area school districts. The supplies are purchased and donated by the credit unions. Assembly of the packets will take place Thursday, August 21 from 7:30am-11:00am at Yakima Valley Credit Union’s Administration Building on the corner of 5th and Tieton.
